How to get wax out of a carpet?

A candlelit living room, feet up, glass in hand and TV on, sounds like a dream, and it is. But your cosy dream can become a living nightmare when suddenly there’s a wax stain on the carpet! Knowing how to get wax out of a carpet is a must for anyone who enjoys lighting some candles for a relaxing evening.

Fortunately, you don’t need any special hard-to-find items for wax removal. You can get this task done with materials you already have at home. As long as you start the removal process right away, you can be sure to get your carpet wax-free, immediately!

Firstly, here are the items you need to get started:

  • Bag of ice
  • Iron
  • Kitchen roll
  • Carpet cleaner
  • Butter knife
  • Hoover

Once you have all your items collected, you can move on to the next step.

Freezing the wax

Place your bag of ice on top of the wax stain, and let it sit for around 10 minutes. Try and make sure the wax doesn’t get wet, as this will make it harder to clean later on.

Scrape off the wax

Once the wax is frozen, grab your knife and scrape off as much of the wax as you can. Don’t be too rough with the carpet as you don’t want any lasting damage to the threads. There’s a chance that if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to remove all of the wax with your knife. If so, you can skip the next step!

Iron the stain

Grab some kitchen roll and place it on top of the wax stain. Turn your iron onto its lowest setting and slowly rub the iron over the kitchen roll, you should see the wax absorb into the kitchen roll like magic. If your iron is too hot, or it’s on the steam setting, you can damage the fibres and even melt them. Once you see the wax being absorbed, reposition the kitchen roll so that a clean area can keep absorbing. Repeat this process until you can see all the wax is gone.

Clean the carpet

Go over the stained area with some carpet cleaner, to get any remaining pieces of wax out of the carpet. Blot with a clean cloth until the stains and moisture is gone. Once your carpet is dry, run your hoover over the area to return your carpet’s texture back to its former glory. It really is that easy! If you followed all the steps correctly, your carpet should be good as new. Now, put your feet back up and pour yourself another glass. But maybe just use one candle this time.
